Two of the most capable thermal rifle scopes available in the UK right now sit in the same price bracket, share the same 640×512 sensor resolution, and both feature an integrated LRF. On paper the NocPix Ace H50R and the HikMicro Stellar 3.0 SQ50L look very similar. In the field they feel and perform quite differently.

We stock both at Blackwood Outdoors and have used both extensively. This is our honest, hands-on assessment — not a spec sheet comparison.

Build and Weight

The most immediately noticeable physical difference between these two scopes is weight. The NocPix Ace H50R is built around a machined aluminium tube — substantial and solid in hand, but around 200g heavier than the SQ50L. For a dedicated rifle mount that rarely moves between guns, this may not matter. If you're swapping between rifles or carrying the scope separately, it's worth considering.

The HikMicro Stellar SQ50L uses a magnesium alloy construction. Despite being lighter it doesn't feel flimsy — it's a well-finished, purposeful housing. Both scopes are rated IP67 for water and dust resistance.

Image Quality — What We Actually See

On paper both scopes share near-identical sensor resolution specifications, so image quality differences come down to lens design, processing algorithms, and real-world use.

At base magnification, the HikMicro Stellar SQ50L shows slightly more image detail. Despite the NocPix running a faster F0.9 lens versus the HikMicro's F1.0, the SQ50L's Image Pro 2.0 processing extracts a touch more fine detail at native zoom. For positive identification of an animal at range — reading the outline, anatomy, and behaviour — this is a meaningful observation.

The gap narrows and reverses as conditions deteriorate. In poor thermal conditions — warm nights when animal and ambient temperatures converge, or in light mist — the NocPix Ace H50R performs slightly better. The Reality+ processing handles environmental thermal noise more effectively, maintaining usable contrast when the HikMicro starts to struggle.

At digital zoom levels, the NocPix produces a more natural-looking image. The HikMicro's Zoom Pro AI processing is impressive but can introduce a processed quality to the image at higher magnification. Personal preference plays a part here, but if a natural thermal image matters to you, the NocPix has the edge.

The Ocular Zoom — A Genuine Advantage

The NocPix Ace H50R features ocular zoom — optical magnification at the eyepiece that can be used alongside or entirely independently of digital zoom. This is not simply digital enlargement. The result is a larger image without the resolution loss or softening associated with e-zoom.

The HikMicro SQ50L does not have ocular zoom. It relies on digital zoom throughout, supported by AI processing to maintain sharpness. Good as that processing is, it remains a fundamentally different approach.

For hunters who regularly engage targets at extended ranges, the NocPix ocular zoom system is a practical advantage that becomes more noticeable the more you use it.

Eye Relief — Both Have Limitations

Neither scope will win awards for eye relief, and it's worth knowing this before you buy.

The HikMicro Stellar SQ50L requires your eye to be pushed fairly firmly into the recoil cup to see the full display. In practice this means your head position must be precise and consistent — less forgiving when mounting quickly in the dark or shooting from an awkward position.

The NocPix Ace H50R is marginally more forgiving. You can achieve a full view of the display with your eye just touching the eye cup, rather than pressed into it. It's not a large difference but it is a real one, particularly noticeable during extended sessions or when shooting from a high seat.

LRF — Range and Display Position

The NocPix Ace H50R ranges to 1200 metres; the HikMicro SQ50L to 1000 metres. Both are accurate to ±1m and both feed directly into their ballistic calculators. For most UK hunting ground 1000m is adequate, but for open moorland or large arable estates the extra NocPix ranging capability earns its keep.

One practical point worth noting on the SQ50L: the LRF reading currently displays in the centre of the screen, which can be distracting when it appears across your target. A top-right display position would be preferable. It's a minor software-level observation but one that stands out in use.

Recoil Activated Video

Both scopes record video automatically on recoil, but the NocPix Ace H50R offers sensitivity adjustment on this function. This is more useful than it sounds — different calibres and rifle/moderator combinations produce very different recoil characteristics, and being able to tune the trigger threshold means the system actually works reliably across your setup rather than missing shots or triggering on movement. A small detail that reflects careful product development.

Battery Life

The HikMicro Stellar SQ50L delivers approximately 9 hours of operation; the NocPix Ace H50R around 7 hours. Both use a hybrid dual-battery system. Both allow the 18650 cell to be swapped in the field without powering down.

The 2-hour difference is the SQ50L's clearest practical advantage. On a long night covering multiple permissions it can be the difference between making it through and reaching for a spare battery.

Warranty

The NocPix Ace H50R comes with a 4-year warranty when registered online — an extra year on top of the standard cover that most buyers are unaware of. Worth doing immediately after purchase.

The HikMicro Stellar SQ50L 3.0 carries a standard 3-year warranty.

Brand Recognition

It's worth being honest about this. HikMicro is a well-established name in UK thermal optics with strong brand recognition among hunters. Many buyers gravitate towards it because they've heard of it or have used a previous HikMicro product.

The NocPix Ace H50R is a less widely known brand in the UK, but the scope itself is exceptional. Those who have used both tend to come away very impressed with the NocPix — it's a case where the product significantly outpaces the brand profile. If you're choosing purely on name recognition, consider that you may be overlooking one of the best performing 640-sensor scopes currently available.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the NocPix Ace H50R if:

  • Image quality in poor thermal conditions is a priority
  • You want ocular zoom for natural, resolution-preserving magnification
  • You shoot at ranges where the extra 200m of LRF matters
  • The 4-year warranty (with registration) appeals
  • You prefer a slightly more forgiving eye relief

Choose the HikMicro Stellar SQ50L 3.0 if:

  • Battery life on long sessions is your primary concern
  • You prefer a lighter, more compact build
  • Fine detail at base magnification is most important for your shooting
  • You want the reassurance of an established UK brand

Our Verdict

Both scopes are genuinely outstanding. At this price point and sensor tier, either will outperform most of what came before them.

On balance, the NocPix Ace H50R has a slight advantage for open ground, longer ranges, and varied thermal conditions. The ocular zoom, superior performance in poor conditions, longer LRF range, and better eye relief add up to a scope that rewards demanding use.

The HikMicro Stellar SQ50L 3.0 is the stronger choice for woodland or mixed-terrain shooting where that extra battery life and sharper base magnification detail earns its keep.
